สำหรับงานแจกรางวัล MTV Music Video Awards ที่ในปีนี้รูปแบบของการจัดงานดูแปลกตาออกไปเนื่องจากสถานการณ์การระบาดของโรคโควิด-19

ทำให้งานในปีนี้ต้องปรับเปลี่ยนมาเป็นการถ่ายทอดให้แฟนๆ ชมผ่านออนไลน์ ในขณะที่มาโชว์ต่างๆ ของศิลปินในงานก็เป็นการนำภาพการแสดงที่เกิดขึ้นตามที่ต่างๆ มาเผยแพร่ในชม

โดยเป็น Lady Gaga ที่คว้ารางวัลในปีนี้ไปครองมากที่สุด 5 สาขาได้แก่ Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Cinematography จากเพลง Rain On Me (ที่ได้ Ariana Grande มาร่วมฟีเจอริ่ง), MTV Tricon Award รวมไปถึงรางวัลใหญ่อย่าง Artist of the Year

ขณะที่ BTS ก็กวาดรางวัลไปทั้ง 4 สาขาที่มีชื่อเข้าชิงได้แก่ Best Group, Best K-Pop, Best Pop และ Best Choreography จากเพลง ON

Taylor Swift คว้ารางวัล Best Direction ไปครองจากเอ็มวีเพลง The Man ที่เธอโชว์ฝีมือกำกับเอง

ส่วน Video of the Year หรือรางวัลมิวสิควีดีโอแห่งปีตกเป็นของ Blinding Lights งานจาก The Weeknd
